MANIFESTO

Rebellious Teaching is about breaking through the walls of conventional teaching – wildly or gently – in society, institutions and our own heads to discover new educational frontiers.

It’s about always asking:

WHAT ELSE IS POSSIBLE?

HOW CAN WE MOVE, TRY AND DO DIFFERENTLY?

We believe everyone is an educator. No boundaries: we believe the rebellious teaching methods of a high school chemistry teacher will inspire a radical painting activist who in turn will inspire a corporate trainer.

And if someone has zero teaching experience? Even better – we’ve all been taught at some point in our lives, we know when teaching is great and when it is not. And so we believe the insights of a student who has not done an hour of teaching in their life are as valuable to educators.

Instead of organising our movement by instution-type or subject area we use categories that can be applied in any setting:

GENDER, BODY-POSITIVITY, POLITICS, CREATIVITY, INCLUSIVITY AND TECHNOLOGY.

What unites us is how creativity and inclusivity are not a nice sauce to add once the whole educational concept is ready – but at the core of everything we do.

We embrace the negative to turn it into positive: fear, shame or ignorance are not something to avoid but are alchemised into educational tools and opportunities. We want to show that many seemingly unsurmountable obstacles are but small hurdles when you have the right support.

And since breaking (unwritten) rules is not always easy, we’re here to help each other when (self)criticism, institutional restrictions or lack of understanding make it hard to persevere – or even try. We’re here to dare to try and to help each other when our actions create anger or resistance. More so – to enjoy (some of) that friction!

WE DON’T WANT TEACHERS TO LEAVE THEM KIDS ALONE

We want to show how education can be thrilling, stunning and anything but restrictive, blowing away the chalk dust that coats the reputation of teaching.

Sometimes, a drop of rebellion is all education needs to fundamentally change it. It’s about actively seeking for that inspiration. So some of us will shout rebelliously from the rooftops and others will provoke with a gentle whisper. And we know: our community will continue to surprise us.

CHANGING THE WORLD STARTS  WITH CHANGING EDUCATION

Join us. No need to knock, just kick in the door – inspire and be inspired.

VULNERABILITY IS REBELLIOUS

BREAKING THE SILENCE IS REBELLIOUS

NOT KNOWING THE OUTCOME IS REBELLIOUS

STEPPING BACK AND DOING NOTHING IS REBELLIOUS

EMBRACING DISCOMFORT IS REBELLIOUS
